On medical English for lay people

Lay people means people who do not specialize in an area. Here, lay people means people who are not medical professionals. If you are not a medical professional, and you are traveling abroad, perfect English is certainly not necessary for minor medical problems. Major medical problems, however, require the care of Japanese speaking medical professionals or competent interpreters. Medical records contain many sad stories of people who had problems because of communication problems between patients and medical professionals.

One option for you to think about is medical history translation. If you have a complicated medical history, you might consider having your medical history translated into English before you travel. Think of this translation as insurance. You probably won’t have to use the translation, but if you do, you’ll have it to give to a doctor.
