What is pain?
Pain is the most frequent reason that Americans go to the doctor's in the United States. Half of all Americans go to the doctor every year due to pain. Pain is very subjective to the person who is in pain. One definition of pain that is widely used in nursing is Margo McCaffery's definition from as early as 1968: "Pain is whatever the experiencing person says it is, existing whenever he says it does." Pain is usually divided into two kinds of pain: acute and chronic. Acute pain is pain that goes away by itself or stops after some rest or medicine. Chronic pain is pain that does not go away.
