On quotation marks
At our site and in our publications, we have written about native Japanese speakers overusing quotations in English. We doubt that this photo, taken from a junk mail pamphlet in Canada, was written by a native Japanese speaker. Other writers, including native English speakers, also have problems using quotation marks. All of the quotation marks in this photo should be deleted. They are incorrect. The writer probably wanted to stress these words, but quotations are generally not appropriate to stress words. Using italics or bold is generally the standard approach.
