Reading
Have you ever noticed how language students study the same rules again and again? American students studying French or Spanish will study the subjunctive again and again. Each time, they will learn something new.
Think of your own experience as an English language learner. How many times have you studied count and non-count nouns in English? You probably know that apple, student, girl, and sandwich are all count nouns, and that literature, rice, water, and furniture are noncount nouns. You may not know that following, mustard, spinach, sheep, and advice are noncount nouns. Consequently, you may need to study noncount nouns again.
Japanese students of English who want to become better writers need to study two areas again and again: reading and writing. Reading and writing are two sides of the same coin. Reading gives us the examples we need to become better writers. Reading helps us to unconsciously learn the pieces of language we will need to craft our writing. Reading is an essential tool for becoming a good writer. To improve your writing, read.
Good writing without reading is impossible. Increasing your reading or starting to read is what you need to do to become a better writer. If you are starting develop a reading habit, one approach is to look for topics of interest online. For example, I’m keenly interested in healthy eating. My current reading project is to look at the differences between healthy and unhealthy food. You might be interested in music. For example, you might want to read about the history of music or the Beatles, in English of course.
Writing is the opportunity to use what you learn and relearn through reading - informal language, formal language, dialogues, phrases, grammar, humor, mood, punctuation, new vocabulary, and syntax - in your writing.
