MLA Style

By Poolie (CC)
The MLA publishes the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (6th edition), providing information needed to follow the MLA rules of style. MLA is the acronym for Modern Language Association. This style is often required by publications in the humanities. You can find information about MLA publications at the MLA website.

Like other style manuals, the MLA has fixed notions of how to write, edit, and format a paper.

Here’s one example: Your last name has to be at the top on the upper right-hand corner one-half inch from the top and flush with the right margin. Your last name is before the page number on every single page of your article.

Here’s a second example: Use commas to separate words, phrases, and clauses in a series.

Example 1:
During the Great Depression, millions lost their jobs, businesses failed, and charitable institutions closed their doors.

However, if the words, phrases, or clauses in the series have internal commas, you must use semi-colons.

Example 2:
During the Great Depression, millions of people, people with children and farms, lost their jobs; businesses, which had been thriving for years, failed; and charitable institutions, which met the needs of the poor and the sick, closed their doors.

The MLA is followed in the United States and Canada and has been translated into Japanese and Chinese.
