The German University of Applied Sciences is an institution of higher education that started in the early 1970s, differing from the traditional university due to its more practical orientation and application, which includes research and vocational aspects. A degree is awarded at a University of Applied Sciences after eight semesters of full-time study with options for specialization as well as one or two additional practical training terms that provide hands-on experience in a real working environment. Students conclude their studies with a final examination and a thesis that usually is an extensive investigation of a current practical or scientific aspect of the profession. The schools represent a close relationship between higher education and the employment system as the students are well prepared for employment and their practical knowledge and orientation makes them very attractive to employers.
