University of Kansas
The University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas (KU) was founded in 1865 and joined the prestigious Association of American Universities in 1909. As of 2009, the association had 60 members working to promote academic research and scholarship as well as undergraduate, graduate, and professional education. The university and its graduate schools are excellent institutions of higher education at very reasonable prices. The university is public.
KU is also strong in sports. The school team is called the Jayhawks and they have won national championships in basketball and other sports. James A. Naismith, who invented basketball in 1891, was the founder of the University of Kansas basketball program.
KU has many alumni of historical and cultural interest:
Vernon L. Smith who won the 2002 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics.
Bob Dole, former U.S. Senate majority leader and Senator, presidential and vice-presidential nominee, and WWII combat veteran.
Nancy Landon Kassebaum (1954) who was the first female U.S. senator (1979-1997) elected without having been preceded in office by her husband.
Scott Bakula, actor, who starred in Quantum Leap and Star Trek: Enterprise.
Don Johnson, actor, who co-starred in Miami Vice and Nash Bridges.
Sara Paretsky, novelist, best known for her creation of V.I. Warshawski.
Paul R. Ehrlich (MA/PhD 1957), entomologist, population researcher and author of The Population Bomb, and 1990 MacArthur Fellow recipient.
