The Warsaw University of Technology began in 1826 when engineering education began in the Warsaw Institute of Technology. The university is one of the largest schools in Central Europe and plays an important role in Poland. Over 10% of the presidents among the top 500 corporations in Poland are alumni of the Warsaw University of Technology.
Alumni such as Stefan Bryła, Jan Czochralski, and Mieczysław Wolfke greatly contributed to world science and technology. Bryła created the basic methods for welding steel structures, designing the first welded road bridge in the world in 1927. The bridge was built across the river Słudwia Maurzyce in 1929. Jan Czochralski invented the Czochralski process. The process was used to grow single crystals and is now used to produce semiconductor wafers. In 1950, Gordon K. Teal and J.B. Little of Bell Labs used Czochralski's method to grow single germanium crystals and produce suitable semiconductors. Mieczysław Wolfke was a physicist known for discovering two types of liquid helium. One of these was He II, which is still the only known superfluid liquid. Wolfke also did ground-breaking work in holography. Dennis Gabor, the 1971 physics Nobel laureate, referred to Wolfke as one of his precursors in developing holography.
During World War II, the Warsaw University of Technology continued to operate underground, developing science and technology for the future and resisting the Germans. Stefan Bryła was arrested and murdered in 1943, but the Warsaw University of Technology continued. Today the university continues as an important center of education and research.
