Lomonosov Moscow State University, founded in 1755, is the largest university in Russia. Empress Elizabeth issued the decree ordering its creation on January 25, 1755 and the first lectures were on April 26. Today, January 25 is celebrated as Students' Day in Russia. Moscow State University and St. Petersburg State University in St. Petersburg both claim to be the oldest higher education institution in Russia. St. Petersburg State University claims to be continuing the university established on January 24 1724 by a decree of Peter the Great. A look at Wikipedia shows some of the great alumni of Moscow State University. We would like to take a look at some Nobel Laureates who are alumni: Alexei A. Abrikosov, Ilya Frank, Vitaly Ginzburg, Mikhail Gorbachev, Aleksandr M. Prokhorov, Andrei Sakharov, and Igor Tamm.
Alexei A. Abrikosov and Vitaly Ginzburg were both co-recipient of the 2003 Nobel Prize in Physics with Anthony James Leggett for their theories about how matter can behave at extremely low temperatures. Ilya Frank and Igor Y. Tamm jointly won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1958 with Pavel Alekseyevich Cherenkov. Frank and Tamm's award was for their work in explaining the phenomenon of Cherenkov radiation as well as the discovery and the interpretation of the Cherenkov-Vavilov effect. Mikhail Gorbachev won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 for loosening Soviet hegemony over Eastern Europe and effectively ending the Cold War. Aleksandr M. Prokhorov formulated the main principles of quantum electronics and created its physical foundation. This work led to the construction of oscillators and amplifiers based on the maser-laser principle, Prokhorov shared the 1964 Nobel Prize in Physics with Basov and C. H. Townes.
Let's also remember Boris Pasternak who was forced to decline the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958.
