Falun Copper Mine

銅鉱山
By Andrew Stawarz (CC)
The Falun copper mine started operating some time before 1000 A.D. At one point during the 17th century, the mine produced approximately 70% of all copper mined in the world. The mine was in operation until December 8, 1992, when over a thousand years of copper mining ended. The mine was included on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2001.

An enterprise for extracting copper and gold from the Great Copper Mountain started sometime in the mid-1200s. The first share in the enterprise is dated 1288 and King Magnus IV of Sweden granted a charter in 1347. The enterprise is believed to be the oldest still-existing enterprise in the world.

The large wooden goat you can see in the photo is from the legend of how the large copper mine was found. A goat herder, looking for one of his goats, noticed the deep red clay on the goat's horns. The red was from the copper: the rest is history.
