A Torre de Belém foi construída para a defesa de Lisboa e também em homenagem ao santo padroeiro da cidade, São Vicente. O Rei João II (1455-1495) construiu a Fortaleza de Cascais como parte desta, porém a fortaleza não foi suficiente para proteger Lisboa dos espanhóis. A fortaleza desmoronou durante a batalha, o que resultou na união das coroas portuguesas e espanholas. Mais tarde, o Rei Manuel I de Portugal construiu a Torre de Belém, de 1515 a 1521, para homenagear a expedição de Vasco da Gama. A Torre de Belém substituiu o Grande Nau, um navio que, até então, defendeu o litoral. Atualmente, a Torre de Belém é um símbolo de Lisboa e um monumento comemorativo de Portugal da Época dos Descobrimentos. Em 1983, a Torre de Belém foi classificada como um Patrimônio Mundial pela UNESCO.
Belém Tower was built both for Lisbon's defense and ceremony. King John II (1455-1495) built the Fortress of Cascais as part of this, but the fortress was not enough to protect Lisbon from the Spanish. The fortress fell during the struggle which resulted in the Portuguese and Spanish crowns uniting. King Manuel I of Portugal later built Belém Tower from 1515 to 1521 to commemorate Vasco da Gama's expedition. Belém Tower replaced the Grande Nau, a ship that had defended the shore until then. Today Belém Tower is a symbol of Lisbon and a memorial to the Portugal of the Age of Discovery. Belém Tower was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
