Kent Laursen and the Solar Pasteurization Unit

In 2005, the Solar Pasteurisation Unit was showcased at INDEX, an international design event. INDEX works to showcase designs that can significantly improve the lives of many people. Danish designer Kent Laursen created this unit to use solar power to decontaminate drinking water, AIDS-infected breast milk, and surgical instruments. The Solar Pasteurisation Unit can also cook food without fire. By the time the unit was showcased at Index, the Solar Pasteurisation Unit prototype had already been successfully tested in Tanzania. Problem:
No water means no life. AIDS infected breastmilk infects babies. You can't find wood where poor people live.

Solution:
This portable solar pasteurisation unit cleans infected water, breast milk, surgical instruments and cooks food without the use of wood. 1.1 billion people in this world could be helped if they have the unit. Unit price approximately 7 dollars.

Let the sun shine through the front side of the unit. Wait until the arrow in the thermometer, (with an icon everybody understands) says it is ready. The first portion takes 1.5 hours to be ready. The second portion takes 30 minutes. The unit is easy to stack for air transport.

New affordable technology can help the world to be a healthier place. We hope that this technology and other such technology will spread across the planet, helping everyone to have better lives.
