Wilhelm and the X-ray
Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen was a German physicist. In 1895, he was the first to produce and detect x-rays. He was awarded the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901. In German, his name is Rontgen, which is spelled as Roentgen in English. The first x-ray Roentgen ever created was an image of his wife's hand.
X-ray machines quickly came into use. The Glasgow Royal Infirmary, one of the very first radiology departments, had an x-ray department by 1896. Soldiers fighting in the Boer War in Africa from 1899-1902 were treated with x-rays as were soldiers in World War I. X-rays were viewed as a marvelous new technology and welcomed much more rapidly than many other new technologies were.
