Robert Koch and Bacteriology
Today, cholera is an exotic disease that we associate with third world countries. In 19th century England, cholera was a feared killer until the work of bacteriologist Robert Koch stopped cholera dead in its tracks. This monument at Sheffield commemorates the 402 people who died of cholera in Sheffield in four short months in 1832. A mass grave by this monument holds the remains of 339 of the deceased.
Robert Koch, in addition to Pasteur, was one of the founders of bacteriology. Koch is also considered one of the founders of microbiology. Koch discovered the tubercle bacillus in 1882 and the cholera bacillus in 1883. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1905 for his work on tuberculosis. Koch also postulated how to establish that an organism causes a disease. Koch's postulates did not win him a Nobel prize, but they were probably just as important.
