The principles of antisepsis in treating wounds
In 1865 British surgeon Joseph Lister proved the principles of antisepsis in treating wounds. Medical practitioners were very conservative concerning new breakthroughs and his work did not spread as quickly as it should have. Although his work was not well received by all during the 19th century, progress did move forward and he was spared the fate of Semmelweis. Some consider Lister as the father of modern antisepsis.
In 1879 Listerine mouthwash, which is still used to this very day, was named after him for his work in antisepsis. The bacterial genus Listeria was also named after him. Lister was honored in many other ways, including being one of only two surgeons in the United Kingdom with a public monument in London. What a different fate from that of poor Semmelweis.
