Drs. Harriot Kezia Hunt and Elizabeth Blackwell
Elizabeth Blackwell was the first female doctor in the United States. She went to Geneva College in New York. She was the first woman publicly identified as going to medical school and the first to graduate with an M.D. Blackwell graduated in 1849, first in her class. Women may have gone to medical school before her though, disguised as men.
Harriot Kezia Hunt was inspired by Dr. Blackwell to become a doctor and was among the first female physicians. The statue in the photo above marks her grave, which is located in Mount Auburn Cemetery. The statue depicts the Greek goddess of medicine: Hygeia. Hunt was the first woman to apply to Harvard Medical School; she applied twice. In both 1847 and 1850 she was refused entry, the first time by the school and the second time by the protests of the male medical students. The Female Medical College of Philadelphia awarded Hunt an honorary medical degree in 1853, recognizing her pioneering work.
