Dr. Edward Jenner and Smallpox Vaccine
Meaduva is going to Nairobi. Her arm is a testament to Dr. Jenner. The top band-aid covers her tetanus and polio vaccination. Below that is where she was vaccinated for hepatitis A and typhoid fever. The band-aid has come off and we cannot see anything in this picture. The middle band-aid is for yellow fever. The bottom band-aid is for mumps, measles, and rubella.
Dr. Jenner developed the first vaccine for smallox in 1798, the first vaccine for any disease. Jenner, sometimes called the 'Father of Immunology, set the stage for many vaccines to follow: Cholera in 1879, rabies in 1885, tetanus in 1890, typhoid fever in 1896, and bubonic plague in 1897. In the 20th century came vaccines for diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), tuberculosis, yellow fever, typhus, influenza, polio, Japanese encephalitis, anthrax, adenovirus-4 and 7, measles, mumps, rubella, chicken pox, pneumonia, meningitis, hepatitis B, Haemophilus influenzae type b, hepatitis A, Lyme disease, and rotavirus. The 21st century has so far added a vaccine for human papillomavirus, but scientists are searching for vaccines for AIDS and other diseases.
Jenner's discovery of vaccinations has saved millions of lives. Without vaccinations, many of us would not be alive today.
