Microbiology
We are starting our pictorial history of modern medicine with Antonie van Leeuwenhoek. In 1676 Leeuwenhoek observed bacteria and microrganisms, the first person to ever do so. This was the beginning of the scientific field of microbiology. While the microscope dates back to around the end of the 16th century, the magnification was not very good. Leeuwenhoek's microscope approximately 80 years later was capable of reaching magnification of up to 200X, making him the first human being to see bacteria, protozoa and spermatoza. Thus microbiology was born and the history of modern medicine started.
