This photo is of the Scaliger Castle of Sirmione. Sirmione was probably a free commune when construction on the castle started in 1199. The castle was completed in 1202. The Scaliger were Lords of Verona. Ezzelino III was elected chief magistrate of the commune in 1226; he converted the office into a permanent lordship. In 1405, Sirmione became a possession of the Republic of Venice. In 1797, Austria acquired Sirmione; Sirmione became part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1860. Wars destroyed most of the castle, but it was rebuilt. The castle is owned by the Town Hall today. Tourists enjoy the castle; weddings take place in the castle too.
