El Castillo, which is Spanish for the castle, is the nickname of this pyramid in the center of Chichen Itza. The pyramid was a temple to the god Quetzalcoatl, who the Mayans called Kukulcan. The pyramid has 91 steps on each of the four sides. Add them up, counting the top step, and the total is 365 steps, one step for every day of the year. Larger pyramids in the Americas are often built on older ones. The Mexican government discovered another temple buried inside El Castillo. Tourists used to be able to climb El Castillo and go inside, but many monuments are now closed to public access. Visitors can walk around the monuments and look, but they cannot climb them or go inside. El Castillo was closed to climbers in 2006 after a woman fell to her death.
Climbing El Castillo, feeling the history while climbing the 91 steps, and looking out from the top of the pyramid gave climbers the opportunity to see part of the Mayan empire from on high. Still, El Castillo is one of the great sites of the world, whether seen from the top or the bottom.
