Photographer A. Kniesel shot this stunning photo of Hohenzollern Castle, which is about 50 km south of Stuttgart in southwest Germany. This castle was owned by the Hohenzollern family. The Hohenzollerns came to power during the Middle Ages and ruled Prussia and more until the end of World War I. Hohenzollern Castle is on top of Mount Hohenzollern.

First built in the 11th century, the castle was completely destroyed after 10 months under siege in 1423. A second castle was built from 1454 to 1461 but fell into disrepair and was demolished except for the chapel.

The castle that we see in the this picture is the third castle. King Friedrich Wilhelm IV built the castle between 1846 and 1867. Today, the castle contains many historical artifacts of Prussian history including a letter from US President George Washington thanking Baron von Steuben, a descendant of the House of Hohenzollern, for his service during the American Revolutionary War.
