Pont Saint-Michel, the bridge in this photo, links the Place Saint-Michel on the left bank to the Ile de la Cite. The bridge was named after the chapel of Saint-Michel, which is nearby. The first bridge was build from 1379 to 1387. During the winter of 1407-1408, ice on the river hit the bridge, which collapsed with the houses on it. Bridges in the Middle Ages often had houses on them. The next bridge was built of wood, but the bridge was not strong enough and was later replaced by a stone bridge. The current bridge that we can see today was built in 1857.
