The Statue of Liberty located on Ellis Island is probably the best known Statue of Liberty to Americans and Japanese. Ellis Island is in two different states: New York and New Jersey. Part of Ellis Island is in New York City and part in Jersey City. This is the statue that millions of immigrants saw as they arrived in America. The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the people of France to America in 1886. The statue was the work of sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. This was not the first statue though. The first Statue of Liberty was built in 1870. The statue is much smaller and you can see it today in the Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris. The Statue of Liberty you see in this picture was erected in the town of Colmar, which was Bartholdi's home town, in 2004 on the centenary of his death.
