Antique Store in Old Quebec

古い町並み
By Lucie Provencher (CC)

Photographer Lucie Provencher shot this picture in Vieux-Quebec, which is French for Old Quebec. Vieux-Quebec is divided into upper and lower sections. This photo was taken on what is known as Antiques Row. Approximately a dozen antiques shops are lined up along rue St-Paul in Lower Town. If you look at the photo, you can see two street signs. The one on the right says Saint-Paul. According to Frommer's, you can find knickknacks, Quebec country furniture, candlesticks, old clocks, Victoriana, Art Deco and Art Moderne objects, and the increasingly sought-after kitsch and housewares of the early post-World War II period.

Vieux-Quebec is one of the oldest cities in North America. Jacques Cartier, the French explorer first built a fort here in 1535 but could not build a permanent settlement. The natives were hostile and the winters were too harsh. On July 3, 1608, French explorer and diplomat Samuel de Champlain, founded the city of Quebec. In 1665, Quebec had a population of 550 people. Today there are almost half a million people in the city itself. Only 1.5% of these people are Anglophones; the vast majority are Francophones. Anglophones are English speakers; Francophones are French speakers.
